Dolphins’ Change Story ‘Tua Tagovailoa


Entering his third season, QB Tua Tagovailoa faces questions about whether the Miami Dolphins made a fatal mistake in picking him against 2020 Offensive Rookie of the Year Justin Herbert, the Los Angeles Chargers’ starting QB. After his brilliant start to 2022, the former #5 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft is rapidly changing the story.

A headline in the Miami Herald in December 2021 said, “Miami Dolphins ‘Tua Tagovailoa still encounters some’ yes, but is ‘from the network experts.” Following his Week 2 performance against the Baltimore Ravens (36 innings of 50, 469 yards, six times TD), a headline this week from CBS Sports refers to him favorably. “join Dan Marino in history books.”

Arguably no defender is under more pressure on him heading into the 2022 season than Tagovailoa. No team has made as many significant moves to surround a young quarterback with high-level talent as the Dolphins did during the off-season.

Miami’s acquisition of Tyreek Hill from the Kansas City Chiefs sent a shockwave to the NFL, but the investment in All-Pro attacking rival Terron Armstead was equally important. It reflects the front office’s belief that Tagovailoa can make the leap needed to confirm his status as a former first-round draft pick.

If the Dolphins can start 2-0, that decision will only look smarter and the ones who knocked Tagovailoa out look more stupid.
