Dolce Zel Bests Stablemate at Lake George

Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb and Robert V. LaPenta’s Dolce Zel overcome several obstacles to get to the final victory of a photo that ends with the stable friend Famous Victor on July 22, $175,000 Lake George Stakes (G3T) at Racecourse Saratoga.

Neither a slow start nor traffic trouble could stop Dolce Zel from winning second place with a ground-saving ride led by Irad Ortiz Jr.

The half-French daughter of Zelzal lacked room for the race around the far turn into the midsection, but found a ramp along the tracks to win by nose, providing coach Chad Brown with his sixth and fourth consecutive coup, Lake George.

“It’s one of many races on the pitch here at the meeting that we’re really looking forward to,” Brown said. “We’ve got the horses and staff to prepare them. Both racehorses did their best today. Over the years it’s been a very rewarding race to look forward to.”

Al Qahira get ahead, race in tandem with Gulfstream Park invader Sister Lou Ann on the first turn when Dolce Zel, who broke a slow step from post 4, tackled a third passing rail. Al Qahira leads in moderate opening rates of: 24.13, :48.33 and 1:12.30 compared to the company going.

As Al Qahira still had to catch when the field turned home, Ortiz tried to move Dolce Zel between the horses that made it past the quarterfinals in the upper stretch, but lacked space. Ortiz then swung Dolce Zel back onto the track as Al Qahira began to waver with Famous Victor unleashed a powerful rally down the middle of the track. Those two dropped it on the rope, stopping the clock at a final time of 1:35.64 for miles on the inner turf.

It is 1 3/4 the other length back Princess Koala who charged late on Tuesday, stood up by Al Qahira.

Dolce Zel ($8.60) visited the winner’s circle for the first time since her North American debut at Florida Oaks (G3T) on March 12 at Tampa Bay Downs.

Ortiz, who has ridden the Dolce Zel in all four starts in her state, says her small stature helps.

“She’s small and that helps a bit because there’s not so much room, but it was the only choice (to stay inside), so I (had) it,” Ortiz said. “She made it through, and after she got over it, she put her head down and fought the other guy. Everything went well.”

A close finish is appropriate, as Brown believes both fillings have an equal chance of being legit.

“People ask me all day when going around the track, ‘Who do you like? Who do you like in this race between them?’,” Brown said. “I think I told them all the truth – it almost happened. And it was almost a deadly heat. These situations are unfortunate when there has to be a loser because of both horses. They’re all running great. We’ve pretty much figured it out, ‘I’ll get it one day. ‘ A deadly heat here in Saratoga. You get two wins for that. Both horses ran very well. “

Brown said August 20 Lake Placid Stakes (G2T) at Spa could be on the cards for both Dolce Zel and Eminent Victor.

Dolce Zel, increasing her income to $307,155, was bred in France by Scuderia Micolo Di Nicola Galli and C. SNC. She is not Dr Fong’s winning mare, Dolce Attesta, making her the half-sister of many groups, Pure Zen won the stakes (Zoffany ).
