However, with more and more women diagnosing themselves with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) after watching trending videos on TikTok, doctors are speaking out.
Based on Women’s Health, the doctors explained that statistically, women are more likely to suffer from overlooked and undiagnosed symptoms. However, they warn licensed professionals should make diagnoses rather than listen to people on TikTok.
If you scroll through TikTok’s #selfdiagnosis videos, there’s a community of #ND neurological patients. Neurodivergent is defined as the way an individual’s brain functions in a way that is different from what society considers “normal” or “average” (aka “neurotypical” or NT). Reports indicate that many forms of neurologic differentiation are often diagnosed in infancy or childhood.
Typically, girls, women, and gender mismatches do not always fit the standard diagnostic criteria of people with neurologic problems. Most of their conditions are misinterpreted as personality defects or quirks.
There is no established definition of what “counts” as neural divergence. Rather, it is an overarching term that refers to a variety of neurological conditions that involve distinctive ways of thinking, communicating, and being in order for society to acknowledge and correct them. Some other disorders may include autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Tourette syndrome (TS), and learning differences such as dyslexia.
Dr Sasha Hamdani, a board-certified psychiatrist on TikTok as @ThePsychDoctorMD, told Women’s Health,
“It is important not to get too hung up on a diagnosis without talking to or corroborating with a mental health professional because a trained brain needs a trained brain to aggregate all the data points. That combines with your medical, psychological and psychiatric presentations to arrive at an accurate diagnosis. “
