Via Jim Calfa: Canelo Alvarez suddenly revealed that he’s rating WBA lightweight champion Dmitry Bivol over IBF/WBC champion Artur Beterbiev as this week’s 175-lb best boxer.
It is hoped that Canelo is not intentionally downplaying Artur Beterbiev as an excuse not to fight him in 2022 or 2023. There are some boxing fans who believe that Canelo turned down Beterbiev in 2019 and for the time being. This match is on Saturday.
They also believe Canelo will make Beterbiev wait before finally fighting him to age him. Beterbiev is 37 years old now, so if Canelo makes him wait until 2023 or 2024, he will likely be slower and not as dangerous as he is now.
Canelo says he considers Bivol (19-0.11 KOs) more of a challenge than unified 175-lb champion Beterbiev (17-0.17 KOs). If Bivol is more of an issue for Canelo than Beterbiev, the Mexican star is likely to lose on Saturday.
Beterbiev will be a pure nightmare for Canelo with his body-ball punches, evil play, steel chin and lightning speed push.
Canelo lacks the stamina to fight at the fast pace and always has, especially as he’s already past 30. He needs to breathe after delivering his only punches. Beterbiev will overwhelm Canelo, forcing him to fight at a pace faster than his limited stamina.
Canelo will face Bivol for his WBA lightweight title this Saturday, May 7, live on DAZN pay-per-view at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
For boxing fans interested in purchasing the Canelo-Bivol event, it can cost $59.99 for DAZN subscribers and $79.99 for non-subscribers.
“I think he is a better fighter. He has more skills than Beterbiev,” said Canelo. “Beterbiev is a really good fighter; strong, always moving forward. But I think Bivol is a really good fighter with a lot of experience. ”
Beterbiev has more titles and has participated in two Olympics for Russia. Given Canelo’s emphasis on winning world titles, why would he choose a champion with fewer belts and lacking Beterbiev’s amateur record?
“Combat aircrafts [Dmitry Bivol] is different,” Canelo told DAZN. “Combat aircrafts [WBA light heavyweight champion Bivol] bring more challenge to me.
“With [Sergey] Kovalev, I feel differently. I became heavier, stronger, but with Dmitry Bivol it will be more difficult because he is strong and young. He’s a really good fighter,” said Canelo.
When Canelo fought Sergey Kovalev, 36, for the WBO lightweight belt in 2019, he looked so muscular, like a bodybuilder.
As for this bout with Bivol, Canelo’s physique is less of a bodybuilder’s, so it’s no surprise he’s not as strong as he was against Kovalev.
It would be wrong if Canelo became muscular in the fight with Bivol like he did in the two fights with Gennady Golovkin and the match with Kovalev because Dmitry would use movement, forcing him to fight with speed. faster than he’s been doing in the past four years.
“It was a shock because any time Canelo was defeated, It was a huge shock,” Eddie Hearn said to Social boxing, when asked if it would be a blow to Canelo if he lost to Bivol. “Anytime Canelo gets beaten by someone it’s going to be a huge shock.”
It would be a shock if Canelo lost to Bivol as it has been nine years since he suffered the only defeat of his career at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr in 2023.
Since then, Canelo is fortunate not to receive defeats against Erislandy Lara and Gennadiy Golovkin. Given the way Canelo doesn’t appear to have lost a decision, it would be a shock if he lost that way to Bivol.
It wouldn’t be a shock if Canelo was hit as he is easily defeated, especially now that his work rate has decreased due to age and weight gain. What’s shocking is that the judges gave it to Bivol.
