DIY Wicker Wood Candle – A Beautiful Message

During the winter months, I basically live for candles! I have an evening ritual that starts around 5 or 5:30 pm when the sun goes down (ahhh!!!!!) where I go around the house and pull down the blinds or curtains and turn on any twinkling lights in when lighting candles.

It’s my way of dealing with winter blues and I’ve been making these homemade wooden wick candles lately, so I thought I’d share.

I usually make wick candles out of soy wood using oil about scents, so that’s what I’ll share here. You can learn How to make soy candles with traditional wicks and we also have a tutorial for Make your own beeswax candle.

What’s so special about candle wick?

I love the crackling bang! Wood wicks burn slightly differently than traditional wicks so they are almost like a small flame; crackling sound from burning logs. I already love the smell and light from candles, so adding this little sound just increased the cozy factor for me.

Supplies you will need:

You can certainly buy candle holders, but before you buy, I recommend you take a walk around the house and see if you already have the ones that might work.

This is how I easily remove residual candle wax so I can reuse the candle holder. You can also save on containers (including things like kitchen bowls or even mixing bowls) if you want an extra-large candle!

How to make a wooden candle wick:

1. Measure the wax particles by filling the container(s) you intend to use. Melted wax will take up less space than wax particles, so keep this in mind.

If you fill the container all the way to the bottom, the melted wax will take up less space after pouring, so this is usually how I measure it.

2. Add the wooden wick to the container. They must come with a metal base. Add a wick patch or glue dot to the bottom of the metal base once the wooden wick is inserted, then add to your empty crate.

3. Melt the wax, then remove from the heat and add your essential oils.

For a smaller candle, I would add anywhere from 8-12 drops. However, you can measure based on your smell, as some people want super scented candles and some people prefer more delicate candles.

4. Pour melted wax into containers. If the candle has a lot of wicks or a slightly uneven base (like a round bowl), you can use items like a wooden spoon to keep the wooden wick from tilting as the wax dries.

5. After the wax is completely dry (it will become solid, look like beads), cut the wooden wick before use.

I currently use these homemade wooden wick candles around the house. But they would also make a really fun gift for friends or family. Enjoy and stay cozy this season! so so. Emma
