Discord revolutionizes online chats with… forums
Discord, the social messaging service that helped replace age-old internet forums, now wants to bring them back. Today, the company Announced Forum Channel, it’s exactly what you imagine: A dedicated space to chat without worrying about a fast-paced chat feed. You’ll find them right below your regular Discord channels. When you create a forum, you’ll be able to restrict posting permissions and set rules for the conversation. Importantly, they will also be compatible with Discord’s AutoMod, which can help clean up the discussion. (Moderation is always the downfall of a poorly performing forum.)
While it’s great that the concept makes a comeback, it’s funny to see Discord explaining the forum concept to younger users. Well ladies, in our day we had to furiously refresh the web to find the latest answers to our questions. Halo legend theory. Discord is often framed as a throwback to the IRC era of messaging, paired with real-time voice chat. So it just makes sense that it would be responsible for helping us relive the glory days of the forums.
