Digital Competition Act proposed by Parliamentary Assembly to regulate big tech companies

A parliamentary panel on Thursday recommended the government enact a digital competition law to regulate the anti-competitive business practices of big Tech companies on their platforms.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has strained relations with many big tech companies, and New Delhi is tightening regulations on companies like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.
Alphabet group Google and Apple previously faced scrutiny from the country’s competition watchdog, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), for alleged abuse of the app market.
“The Commission recommends that the government consider and introduce a digital competition law to ensure a fair, transparent and competitive digital ecosystem, which will benefit only for our country and the nascent economy but also for the whole world,” the panel said in a report submitted to the lower house of the Indian parliament.
The council recommends identifying top tech players as systematically important digital intermediaries to combat monopolies and warns them “not to favor their own incentives over those of competitors” when acting as intermediaries for supply and sales markets.
Amazon and opponents overturned car is facing charges of anti-competitive practices in the country, such as advertising preferred sellers on websites and favoring listings of some sellers.
Companies including Facebook (META.O), Twitter and Google (GOOGL.O) have for years been concerned about many of the government’s proposed regulations for the tech sector, with companies complaining about the burden. excessive compliance. The complaints have sometimes strained relations between New Delhi and Washington.
Amazon, Google, Meta, Twitter and Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A specialized digital market unit should be established within the competition watchdog, the panel said, adding that the competitive behavior of big tech companies should be monitored before, not after, the market. The school became a monopoly.
