About the prevalence of diabetes in women, we at ETimes-TOI spoke with Dr. V. Mohan – President and Chief Diabetes Officer of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialist Center on the topic including the signs, symptoms, risk factors, and other risks associated with it.

ETimes-TOI: At what age are women more susceptible to diabetes?

Dr. V. Mohan: Women can develop diabetes at any age. During puberty and adolescence, they can develop both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Women’s risk of type 2 diabetes remains slightly lower than men’s until they reach menopause. . After menopause, women have a markedly increased risk of both type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

ETimes-TOI: How does it affect them?
Dr. V. Mohan:
Women in general seem to be less physically active and tend to gain weight quickly. This makes them more susceptible to type 2 diabetes. They also often have more stress because problems in the home and other problems can also affect them adversely.

ETimes-TOI: What is the right age for women to start monitoring blood sugar?
Dr. V. Mohan:
If there is no family history of diabetes, women can begin screening for diabetes at age 25 or 30.

For people with a family history of diabetes, it is better to start screening at the age of 20. In case they have symptoms of diabetes even in their late teens, they can be checked.

ETimes-TOI: What are the early signs of diabetes in women? What are the symptoms only seen in women?
Dr. V. Mohan:
The signs are basically the same as in men.

Common symptoms include increased thirst, increased urination, non-healing wounds, and fatigue.

Genital infections are often the first sign. However, if they have vulvovaginitis, diabetes should be ruled out immediately.

ETimes-TOI: Is there a risk of other serious illnesses?

Dr. V. Mohan: Yes, if they have diabetes, they are probably already obese, they are also prone to high blood pressure, dyslipidemia (high cholesterol) and heart disease. Also, people with diabetes are more prone to certain cancers, for example. Breast and uterine cancer are more common in people with diabetes.
