Devin Haney wants to show his skills on Lomachenko on May 20
Via Adam Baskin: Devin Haney says he wants to show the boxing world how much he is ahead of Vasyl Lomachenko when they fight on May 20.
Undisputed lightweight champion Haney (29-0, 15 KOs) says he’s been calling Lomachenko (17-2, 11 KOs) for years and that he’ll beat him even then.
Haney almost looks bitter, like he’s carrying a chip on his shoulder about Lomachenko not fighting him years ago. You hate to see bitter boxers years later because it tells you they’re living in the past.
Lomachenko wasn’t motivated to fight Haney years ago because he was an unknown and brought little value to the table.
The one Lomachenko wants to fight at 130 and 135 is Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, but his former promoters at Mayweather Promotions don’t want to be in that fight, which is understandable.
Now, some boxing fans believe Lomachenko, 34, lost something in his fight, which would give Haney a strong chance to beat him on May 20. when the two fight at an unspecified location.
When Lomachenko was at his peak from 2013 to 2017, Haney was nearly impossible to match him at the time, but now that Loma is old and Devin big, he will be hard to beat.
If you take away Haney’s size advantage and pit him against a top Lomachenko, he’ll have trouble handling his skills.
“I told him a long time ago, ‘Fight me now because it’s only going to get worse,’ and right now, Now I’m just another breed of warrior. I’m a much more mature fighter than when I called him out years ago,” Devin Haney told. Monday about Vasyl Lomachenko.
“I want to show how many levels I am above him at this point in my career.
If Haney loses to Lomachenko, he will never give up and that will affect his career. Losing this version of Lomachenko means he will never beat him. That’s why this is such a risky fight for Haney as his popularity will plummet if he is defeated.
Assuming Haney wins, he has to stay in lightweight long enough to fight Tank Davis and Shakur Stevenson. Leaving the division without fighting those two would confirm in the eyes of many that he feared them.
