Devin Haney rematch vs. George Kambosos Jr is scheduled to take place on October 15 in Melbourne, Australia
Via Sean Jones: Undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney and former 135 lb champion George Kambosos Jr will have a rematch on October 15 in Melbourne, Australia.
Dan Rafael is reporting on the news of the second game between undefeated Haney (28-0, 15 KOs) and Kambosos (20-1, 10 KOs) scheduled for October 15 at Rod Laver Arena.
This is a significantly smaller venue than the previous fight at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne.
Rod Laver Arena’s seat 14,200 fans, while Marvel Stadium has capacity 56,347. Given the one-sided nature of Haney’s 12-round unanimous decision win over Kambosos Australia on June 5, less fan interest in the rematch is expected.
According to Rafael, event organizers Haney vs. Kambosos is still working on the financials. That would be complicated because if there is little interest from Australian boxing fans, the Haney-Kambosos rematch won’t be sold on a pay-per-view basis in that country, and ticket may not sell to small locations.
Last June, Haney defeated Unlucky Kambosos, beat him with these scores: 116-112, 118-110 and 116-112. You could argue that Haney’s two previous opponents, Joseph ‘Jojo’ Diaz and Jorge Linares, faced him more than Kambosos in that match.
Kambosos fought like an average underdog contender, but that’s not surprising because his best career was won before falling to the wounded and sick-looking man. Teofimo Lopez is the Mickey Bey & Lee Selby of the ancients. Both of those wars were almost razor-sharp.
Ideally, the Kambosos should atone by beating a few solid opponents at 135 before facing Haney in their rematch. With that said, Kambosos will likely lose to the top contenders at 135th place.
Dan Rafael said: “A sequel is planned to feature the title of First Division Boxing on the ESPN card on October 15 at the famous Rod Laver Stadium – home of the Australian Open tennis tournament – in Melbourne (where it’s October 16 Australian time). above Against the weirdos unite.
“Organizers are still working through sponsorship of the event with the Victorian Government.”
It’s understandable why Kambosos doesn’t want to give up his contract rematch with Haney because it’s going to be a good payday, and possibly his last.
Kambosos is said to be a wonder one hita boxer who appeared out of nowhere and got lucky to fight Teofimo at the right time in his career.
The best Kambosos can hope for in a rematch with Haney is that he’s competitive enough to make it a close and enjoyable affair.
If it’s competitive, Kambosos will be useful for other top boxers like Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, Vasyl Lomachenko and Ryan Garcia to use as a B-side support to create a superficial interest in their war.
Unfortunately, Sean Jones doubts that the Kambosos will make it even remotely against Haney in their rematch in October because he’s not talented enough.
Kambosos has had 15 minutes of fame, and he might disappear into the sunset and forgotten after he lost to Haney again.
