Haney (28-0, 15 KOs) looks like he’s not sure if he’ll stay at 135 after the Kambosos game. Whether he stays to face Lomachenko will be determined by how he performs against the Kambosos in their rematch on ESPN at Rod Laver Arena.
Top Rated promoter Bob Arum wouldn’t be pleased if Haney chose not to fight Lomachenko, as he made it clear on Monday that that’s the fight he plans to take next.
“Plus, my main focus right now is George Kambosos. After I won, I’ll leave it to my dad to choose and let him see what I look like“Devin Haney said.
“He has been there since day one and understands me better than anyone. So if he feels like I’m healthy enough and my weight is good, and I can stay and fight [Lomachenko at lightweight], then I will do it. It all depends on my dad. my coach, and we’ll see what’s next.
“For now, my main focus is on George Kambosos and will be coming back to Australia and doing it again to perform at the top level again as best as possible for the Australian fans and the Australian people and let’s do it again. Go there and have fun,” Haney said.
“Because Vasily Lomachenko came to the United States to overcome everything he did to get into the ring,” Bill Haney said when asked about Devin Haney’s thoughts on the possibility of fighting Lomachenko.
“These boys are warriors. Lomachenko is a good boxer, but I know Devin has something special. But right now, we have George Kambosos on the menu for October 16, and that’s the thing.
“Our focus is 100% on him and Devin makes history. This was a historic match for Devin in the sense that no one in the four-belt era other than Pernell Whitaker had ever won belts and defended them.
“So it’s a great opportunity to add to his legacy to come to Australia and do it in front of the Australian fans again,” said Bill Haney.
