Via Sean Jones: Devin Haney is confident he will knock out four-belt lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. when the two shared the ring on June 4 for the undisputed 135 lb championship in Australia.
Boxing fans have been looking forward to seeing Kambosos Jr defend against Vasyl Lomachenko, but that’s not happening now.
Haney promoter Eddie Hearn says he is finalizing a deal with Kambosos promoter Lou DiBella for a big fight on June 4.
Now that Haney’s main competition is gone with Vasyl Lomachenko leaving to fight in Ukraine, Devin is by default in a very good position to have a clash with Kambosos Jr.
Boxing fans would obviously prefer to see Kambosos Jr face to face with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis or Ryan Garcia rather than Haney, those two fighters are not options to face the Australian next.
It’s pretty low for Haney or one of the 135th contenders, and that’s unlikely to happen.
“I have so many different styles that any style I wear that night,” Devin Haney told iFL TV about his confidence in defeating George Kambosos Jr.
Kambosos Jr. with. Haney will likely be the ONLY match to watch with plenty of runs, jabs, and holds on Devin’s part. Obviously money would be good for Kambosos to make that fight, but it would be a bad match for him and the fans.
The only way Kambosos defeats Haney is if he knocks him out, and unfortunately he lacks a chance in his punches to complete that mission. Kambosos Jr is a skilful, hit-and-run fighter who specializes in butchering meat with single shots.
“Obviously my ring IQ, it’s going to be completely different from what he used to do,” Haney said of Kambosos Jr. “I take my hat off to him, he’s a great fighter, but he’ll see something different when he gets in the ring with me.
“Yeah, he’s got the speed, he’s got the speed, but for me it’s more than about the timing,” Haney said, acknowledging the 28-year-old Kambosos Jr’s arm and leg speed.
“You can be the fastest fighter in the world, but if you’re swinging in the air, it won’t matter. It’s all about timing,” Haney said.
If Kambosos has more talent for him, it’s likely his promoters will give him a “beautiful belt” against one of the top 15 contenders, but it would be too risky not to. aleatory.
“Kambosos, that’s the only one we’re focusing on right now,” Haney told ESNEWS. “It’s the fight that should be fought for the undisputed truth and we’re not focused on anyone else.”
Even the lower ranked contenders at lightweight could beat Kambosos. After all, this is a boxer who has struggled to beat the lackluster 37-year-old Mickey Bey and 34-year-old Lee Selby by split decisions.
Sean Jones believes Kambosos will lose to ALL of the following sideline contenders:
- William Zepeda
- Michel Rivera
- Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz
- Richard Commey
- Masayoshi Nakatani
It will be interesting to see how the Kambosos deal with the power of Zepeda, Rivera, Commey and Pitbull Cruz.
Those guys would be much more interesting to watch in a fight against Kambosos Jr than Haney, who would goofy stab him into the night.
If Haney has the power and doesn’t fight that boring Mayweather fighting style, it will be fun to see the Kambosos try to deal with him. However, Haney has no power, and his hit, run, and hold fighting style is hard to catch.
“We’re going to give him every chance because we want the fight not to be good and Devin said that’s the only fight we’re focused on at the moment,” said Eddie Hearn.
“June 4 is the proposed date, so we have two or three weeks to do the fight, really. At the same time, we want to plan Devin’s fight in December.
“So we are happy to wait until June, provided we get that undisputed fight. We’re trying to close that at the moment. DAZN is talking to us and talking to Lou DiBella. Hopefully we will get the consent and notice on time,” Haney said.
