Dettori was replaced by Atzeni Aboard Stradivarius

One of British motorsport’s most successful partnerships ended on 19 July with Frankie Dettori being replaced with Andrea Atzeni on board. Stradivarius for the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup (G1) next week.

The decision to replace the Dettori was made by the owner of the Stradivarius, Bjorn Nielsen, and marks the latest chapter in the debacle from public criticism and scrutiny that motorists have endured both during and after Royal Ascot last month.

Nielsen said: “Frankie Dettori, who has had a great relationship with Stradivarius and has ridden him to more illustrious victories than any other horse, will by mutual agreement give up riding to Andrea Atzeni. at the Goodwood Cup.

“Frankie is not only ‘Strad’s biggest fan’ but a very good friend and of course, I look forward to seeing him continue his phenomenal career as one of the great racers. greatest beat of all time.”

Together, Dettori and Stradivarius have won 15 Group races, including the Gold Cup (G1) at Royal Ascot three times, the Goodwood Cup (G1) twice and the Lonsdale Cup (G2) at York’s Ebor Festival on three occasions, although they faltered twice. in their attempt to compete with the Yeats by winning their fourth Ascot Gold Cup.

Dettori and joint trainers John and Thady Gosden initially agreed on the equestrian player taking a “holiday” from the helm after Royal Ascot, in which John Gosden twice expressed frustration. and was considerably disappointed in Dettori’s riding for his horses, as well as his attitude before and after the races.

Stradivarius and Frankie Dettori finished third in the Gold Cup

The ride given to Stradivarius proved an important highlight as John Gosden, Nielsen and Dettori engaged in animated discussion after the 8-year-old finished third in the Gold Cup to Kyprios stepped back from his prominent position and then struggled to get in the way before being forced to make a wide turn in the home court for a clear run.

After the loss, Nielsen told reporters: “You can’t blame the horse here.”

The day after the Gold Cup, John Gosden said: “Our hero complicated it yesterday and I’m clear on my definition of that. I think it’s right to say what you think. It’s over, It’s over, it’s over, and we move on.”

Dettori emphasized Stradivarius’ age after his loss to Ascot, saying he did not have the pace of younger horses and that “it was a good era for him.”

Having been significantly substituted on Gosdens’ horses during Criterion Stakes at Newmarket last month, 51-year-old Dettori outlined how he plans to spend most of July competing abroad while reaffirming his commitment to ends up continuing to ride until at least the end of next year.

However, less than two weeks after the “vacation” was announced, Dettori was back riding many of the Gosdens’ leading horses, including Inspire who was defeated 1-7 in the Falmouth Stakes (G1), and Emily Upjohn people lined up in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Qipco (G1) Shares on Saturday, with the joint support of the relevant owners.

With Dettori not riding Stradivarius in the final horse race in Group 1 on July 26, the mount will be taken over by Atzeni, who is undefeated in three star starts.

Nielsen added: “Andrea will be no stranger to Stradivarius as they together go undefeated, winning the 2017 and 2018 Goodwood Cups as well as the 2017 Queen’s Vase.”

Neither Dettori nor Atzeni could be reached for comment on Tuesday.

Stradivarius is the second 2-1 favorite for the Goodwood Cup after Kyprios favorite 7-4, with the second Gold Cup Star Mojo and Trueshan Northumberland Plate winner on his most recent outing, next in betting.

Trueshan, who enjoys giving, landed last year’s Goodwood Cup on soft grass after Stradivarius was a latecomer to the finish. Trueshan took a 6-1 (from 3-1) lead for this year’s race on Tuesday as England experienced record heat and with Goodwood turf being labeled well-to-sure, good in many places.

However, coach Alan King said he is eager to run Trueshan if the ground is good next week, and added when speaking to Racing Post’s Front Runner: “He did a little bit of work on Saturday and he’ll be working on Wednesday. He’s exactly where we want him.”

Whether the Mojo Star will line up is uncertain, with coach Richard Hannon planning to speak with Kia owner Joorabchian before making a final decision.

“I don’t know what we’re going to do yet,” Hannon said. “I need to talk to the owner again about it, but I would say at this stage, I doubt we’ll run him there.”
