Detroit judge assigned to traffic court after handcuffing teenager
Judgment Kenneth King is returning to the bench after a break from competition. However, upon return, Detroit judges will handle cases and traffic tickets. The update comes after he was suspended last month for bringing in a teenage girl handcuffs and prison uniforms during his field trip.

King later defended his actions during the scenario which involved the girl falling asleep multiple times in his courtroom. After warning the teenager about her sleepiness, King claims she responded with an “attitude”. Therefore, he called for her to be treated as a criminal defendant. First, he took her out of the room. He then ordered handcuffs and uniforms. Additionally, he asked other students at the scene to vote on whether he should temporarily detain the teenager in a juvenile facility.
Judge King told the local press that he was most upset by her reaction to his warning. He added that his aim was to show the teenager how to “behave in the courtroom”. In his words, he didn’t feel it “It’s been a long time since I’ve had that kind of respect.”
“…Because I will do whatever I need to do to get to these kids and make sure they don’t come before me,” the Detroit judge added.

Here’s what’s next for Judge Kenneth King
Not long after doubling down on his actions, he was temporarily suspended from handling cases. Chief Justice William McConico also revealed that King was under investigation and was required to undergo training before returning to the bench. At the time, a statement from McConico said King’s actions did not demonstrate the court’s commitment to an “environment free of intimidation or disrespect.” He was on the bench for about six weeks but was paid for his training.

According to Detroit Free PressJudge King will return to court next week. Instead of handling big cases like murder and domestic violence, he will have to appear in traffic court. A letter from Chief Justice McConico stated:
“Judge King successfully completed his training and began hearing cases on the traffic docket, replacing another judge who was on vacation. On Monday, September 30, he will take up his job in the traffic department. We appreciate his efforts in preparing for this role and wish him success as he assumes this new responsibility.”
King has yet to publicly respond to his demotion. A Chicago-based consultant provided him with rehabilitation training, which explored the concept of “Conscious Discipline.”
