Demi Moore looks back at her famous Vanity Fair cover

In Moore’s mind, the reaction to the photo came from a deeply puritanical place. “Why should we deny that we had sex?” the star of the 1995 film The Crimson Letter asked. “Is that the fear, that if you show your belly, it means, oh my god, you’ve had sex.”

This is not the first time this information has appeared in recent days. Talk to Interview Earlier this week, Moore also addressed the now-legendary photo. “Obviously we did some clothed shots, but towards the end of the shoot we did other shots of me naked. I remember saying to Annie [Leibovitz]’Wouldn’t it be great if they used it as the cover?’”

“Then, two weeks later,” Moore continues, “Annie called me to say, ‘Hey, I sent you this image. How would you feel about them using it as a cover? Or we could do a picture of your hand covering your chest.’ It’s not that I was completely naive, but I never imagined it would have the impact it did, because I was just reflecting my feelings—that women don’t have the opportunity to express themselves when they’re pregnant.”

The photo ushered in a new era for expecting celebrities, former Vanity Fair editor Tina Brown “Every pregnant star since then, they all want to do Demi Moore’s scene,” she said. Brown told CNBC in a 2018 interview. Today, “pregnant stars want to say, [this is] “It was my rite of passage,” Brown said. “I got to do my own Demi Moore album cover.”
