De La Hoya wants Charlo vs. Munguia, tell Showtime that DAZN has to participate

Via Jim Calfa: Golden Boy Promotion’s Oscar De La Hoya says he wants the fight between Jermall Charlo and Jaime Munguia, but he needs Showtime’s approval to let DAZN share the broadcast of the battle.

Showtime wanted to be the only broadcaster of the Charlo-Munguia war on pay-per-view, but De La Hoya said that DAZN also needed to be able to show the fight.

DAZN has built Munguia’s brand by displaying his battles on their platform, so they naturally don’t want to be left out of the most important battle of his nine-year professional career.

Unless Showtime agrees to let DAZN share the broadcast of the Charlo vs. Munguia, that’s not going to happen. You can understand DAZN’s point of view when you want to share during the match broadcast because there is a high chance that Munguia (39-0, 31 KO) will lose.

Munguia failed to please heavyweight boxing fans in 2022 by turning down a title fight against the WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade and recently rejected a title removal tool against Zhanibek Alimkhanuly.

Munguia, 25, is ranked #1 with the WBC and WBO, but he has failed to capitalize on that high ranking.

Boxing fans believe Munguia will try to face IBF 160-lb champion Gennadiy Golovkin in late 2022 or early 2023.

Jaime Munguia vs Charlo, listen, we want a clear fight, and Charlo is the champion; he was cut larger. We all know that; that’s common sense,” said Oscar De La Hoya Twitter.

“Showtime, yes. You have Showtime’s pay-per-view war, but I need DAZN to join. They built Jaime Munguia; that’s just fair. That is business.

“More platforms, more pay-per-view, and more money for warriors. What’s wrong with that? ‘ said De La Hoya.

Well, it doesn’t look like Showtime will change their mind about not wanting to share the broadcast for the Munguia vs Charlo vs DAZN fight.

With a big money game coming up in 2023 between Charlo and Canelo Alvarez, it’s understandable why Showtime wouldn’t want to share the Charlo-Munguia fight with DAZN. They don’t need.

Besides, it was a risky fight for Charlo and not a good idea for Showtime to let that fight go. If Charlo loses to Munguia, Showtime can forget about the battle between Jermall and Canelo in 2023.

WBC middleweight champion Jermall (32-0, 22 KOs) looked awful in his final bout against Juan Macias Montiel (23-5-2, 23 KOs) last June, was hit multiple times by the Mexican heavyweight during their competition in Houston.

Some believe that 32-year-old Charlo isn’t living life at this point in his 14-year career, partying too much between battles, enjoying the millions of dollars he’s earned. Some believe that Charlo is no longer mentally focused on the sport.

If it is true that Jermall is going through motions at this stage in his career, it’s better for Showtime that he NOT play Munguia because he will lose to him, and that would ruin their plans for a Great Canelo battle in 2023.

Upcoming Golden Boy fighting events

“Vergil Ortiz vs. McKinson, game week, we can’t wait. At the Galen Center, live on DAZN. It’s going to be a great battle,” De la Hoya said this Saturday March 19 on DAZN between undefeated weightlifters Vergil Ortiz and Michael McKinson in Los Angeles.

Vergil Ortiz (18-0, 18 KOs) will likely destroy McKinson (21-0, 2 KOs) this Saturday night. Too bad a match better than this couldn’t be made by Golden Boy for the main event on DAZN.

“Ryan Garcia, April 9, his big comeback,” De La Hoya said of King Ry’s comeback fight against Emmanuel Targoe (32-1, 15 KOs) at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. “Ticket almost sold out in San Antonio. It will be a great fight,” said De La Hoya.
