The match will take place on March 25, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, in a match that will be televised in the United States on Showtimes PPV.
Plant won the IBF belt in January 2019 and he defended that belt three times, until suffering the only loss of his career to Canelo Alvarez on November 21, Benavidez won the belt for the first time. WBC in September 2017, made 1 title defense and was later stripped by the IBF for a positive cocaine test. Benavidez regained that title in September 2019 defeating Anthony Dirrell, but Benavidez was later stripped of the title again when he failed to gain weight in the next match.
Each of them only fought once in 2022. In May, Benavidez quickly scored for David Lemiuex to win the 3rd round. And then in September, Plant recovered well from the match. lost to Canelo, and he brutally took down the aforementioned Anthony Dirrell.
This is a very compelling clash of contrasting styles and it has the potential to reveal a lot about the current state of the super midsize class. Although Plant lost to Canelo, a win over Benavidez would probably pave the way for a potential rematch with the Mexican superstar. And if Benavidez wins, interest in the showdown between him and Canelo will almost certainly increase a lot.
