“He was probably 175, 180,” Porter said of Benavidez. “I wasn’t impressed with him as the type of guy who would go up to 190 points in the ring. I think David Benavidez put his weight correctly, and he came into the ring ready to fight.
“But I think Caleb Plant’s speed is a bit faster than what David used to do. Other than that, I think the foot movement is much sharper and better than what David Benavidez was used to.”
Carson Merck said: “In my opinion, that’s David’s biggest weakness, his legs.
“Then there’s the exact punch that we know Caleb has. Caleb can stab you from the outside. Caleb can stab you, but the strength will decrease,” Porter said.
“No, Canelo isn’t down, but Canelo is definitely adjusting his tempo and looking for moments, saves and that sort of thing. I think David Benavidez’s style is a bit different, and I think David wears a lot of things on his arms and gloves.
“I wonder what that looks like against someone who is at an elite level and has some of his powers. [Plant] owns and has some speed of its own and can move.
“This is a matter for both of you. I think you learn a lot, whether you lose, win or draw, and I think Caleb definitely learned a few things while in the ring with Canelo. This energy is on another level and if you’ve never been there before, you’re going to have to find a way to figure out, ‘Okay, I get it. I’m stable, I’m comfortable, I’m confident right here.’
“There is a roller coaster ride of emotions that you go through. I think he [Plant] went through that now. I think he’s hungrier now than he was before the Canelo fight. I might overestimate,” Porter said.
“I think the personal distaste they have for each other also helps because even if he was a little less hungry, he still hates this guy. So he’s definitely not going to use any shortcuts against David Benavidez, and neither is David Benavidez against Plant,” Merck said of Plant’s dislike of Benavidez.
