Via Sean Jones: Jermall Charlo said he hopes a fight between him and David Benavidez is possible after he defends the WBC middleweight belt against Maciej Sulecki on June 18.
Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) insists he’s not afraid of former two-time WBC super middleweight champion Benavidez (25-0, 22 KOs), and the fight has been fueled.
Last month, Charlo and Benavidez had a brief confrontation on April 16 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The two boxers have different views on what happened. While Benavidez said that Jermall was guarded by a security team, he vehemently denied that was the case.
It would be a good idea if Charlo showed boxing fans that he seriously wants to fight Benavidez by telling his PBC manager to let it happen.
Jermall, 31, has been in too many lower-level balance fights since he won the WBC middleweight belt in 2019.
Promoter Eddie Hearn mentioned last week that Jermall didn’t fight anyone to deserve a fight with Canelo Alvarez, and he’d love to see him step up and face Benavidez.
Jermall’s contest at 160:
- Juan Macias Montiel
- Sergiy Derevyanchenko
- Brandon Adams
- Matt Korobov
- Jorge Sebastian Heiland
- Hugo Centeno Jr
“He’s had some great battles. It’s boxing, though,” Jermall Charlo told Against TV Hub when asked about his June 18 belt defense against #4 WBC Maciej Sulecki.
“We will let him in. We’ve noticed some flaws that we need to fix. We have time, so we are working on everything. I do not know; it’s boxing, so we’ll see how it goes.
“At this level, everyone is trying to stay alive and give me the best fight they can give me.
“He was about to turn that into something,” said an agitated Jermall when asked about his confrontation with David Benavidez on April 16 at the Errol Spence Jr. with. Yordenis Ugas at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
“He grabbed my arm, and I checked his**; it’s as simple as that,” Charlo said of Benavidez. “He tried to see it all. Heaven and earth, no one is afraid without Benavidez. I’m in Cali. No one is behind me right now. Where is he?
“We are warriors. I’m not afraid of anyone. I’m not afraid of this clown-a** dude. He’s just talking nonsense. He’s trying to build his hype. He wants that fight.
“I want that fight too. If they make it happen, we’ll move on. I’m not worried about this guy. You are all worried about him.
“Hopefully, yes,” Charlo said when asked if he hopes to fight Benavidez after his June 18 game against Maciej Sulecki. “It has already been pushed. They know what the fans want,” said Jermall.
