David Avanesyan wants the next Conor Benn, Keith Thurman or Boots Ennis

Via Barry Holbrook: David Avanesyan wants Conor Benn, Keith Thurman or Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis next after successfully defending his EBU weightlifting title last Saturday night with his first knockout win over the unbeaten Oskari Metz. there.

Avanesyan (29-3-1, 17 KOs) knocked out Metz (15-1, 5 KOs) with a massive left hook to the head in the first round last Saturday night in their headfight at Wembley Arena in London, England.

When the 30-year-old Finnish boxer was back on his feet, Avanesyan arbitrarily tagged him with powerful shots until the referee stepped in to examine him.

After quickly checking Metz’s serious condition, referee Giuseppe Quartarone sent off the field at 2:00 in the first half.

The win for Avanesyan, 33, was his fifth successful defense of his 147-lb EBU title and the easiest win to date.

Going forward, WBO 2nd, WBC 3rd place Avanesyan says he wants to fight for the next world title if he can. In short, he said he would be ready to fight Conor Benn, Keith Thurman or Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis next.

Unfortunately, you can’t rule out a fight between Avanesyan and Benn (20-0, 13 KOs) as Conor and his promoter Eddie Hearn are not interested in that bout.

Benn, 25, insists that Avanesyan has nothing to say and that he wants to take on former world champions like Adrien Broner or Maurice Hooker.

Currently, Benn is expected to face 34-year-old Chris Van Heerden next month on April 16. Van Heerden hasn’t fought in two years and hasn’t won one in the past three years.

“I believe my next fight is for the world title. I’m ready, and now is my time,” David Avanesyan told iFL TV in reaction to his first knockout win over Oskari Metz last Saturday night.

“Listen, you need to ask my team. I am ready. I want, and I hope my next fight will be a world title fight,” Avanesyan said when asked if he wants to fight Conor Benn, Jaron Ennis or Vergil Ortiz Jr next.

Former WBA/WBC Weight Champion Thurman (30-1, 22 KOs) is another unlikely choice, as he is campaigning for a world championship shot against the winner of the unified clash April 16 between IBF/WBC champion Errol Spence Jr. and WBA champion Yordenis Ugas.

“With WBC, I’m #2. I don’t know, but maybe they need to change me to #1 [ahead of current #1 Vergil Ortiz Jr],” Avaneysan said. “Before this fight, it was between #1 Ortiz and #2 David. I need that fight.

“Vergil Ortiz married another boxer and a different way [route] with WBA. Tomorrow, if they call me and say, ‘David, you need to fight this guy for this title, I’ll take it,’ Avanesyan said.

Vergil Ortiz Jr withdrew from last Saturday night’s game against Michael McKinson due to medical issues. When Ortiz returns, his supporters at Golden Boy will likely put him in with a suitable opponent to guarantee him 100% before sending him in with one of the champions.

Ortiz was popular enough that he didn’t need to risk fighting the likes of Avanesyan to get a title.

“The fight was great,” Avanesyan said when asked if he wanted to fight Keith Thurman next. “Listen, I’m #2, and Keith Thurman is #3. It could be. I take my job and do my job. I want to be in the ring with Thurman or whoever. I do my job. This is my job.

“I need to win my matches. It doesn’t matter who my opponent is. I am ready for anyone. I’m hopeful,” Avanesyan said when asked if he thinks he can become a world champion.

“I will go home and see my kids and family, enjoy the time and start working out. I’ll wait for my team to call me and say, ‘David, you need to come back and get ready for a big fight.’

“I am ready to fight for a world title for WBC, WBA, WBO or IBF. I’m ready for a fight. I believe I will win a world title. Fight me here,” Avanesyan said.
