One of the most common symptoms is a circular or oval rash around a flea bite.

This rash usually occurs between one and four weeks of infection but can appear after three months and can last several weeks, suggests the NHS.

The agency adds: “The rash may be flat, or slightly raised, and be pink, red, or purple when present on white skin.

“It can be difficult to see a brown and black skin rash and it can look like a bruise.
