Danny Garcia vs Jose Benavidez Jr. on Showtime on July 30 in New York

Via Dan Ambrose: Danny Garcia and Jose Benavidez Jr have agreed to fight July 30 in the 154 lb main event on a PBC card at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Both have been inactive for most of the past two years, and it’s unclear what either of them left in the tank.

Benavidez, 30, the brother of highly ranked super-middleweight contender David Benavidez, has fought once since losing to WBO weight champion Terence Crawford in 2018.

Jose Benavidez Jr (27-1-1, 18 KOs) took a long break last November and battled amazingly to get a 10-round majority draw against Francisco Emanuel Torres. Luckily Benavidez didn’t have to concede a loss as he fought poorly and looked like he lost.

34-year-old former world champion Danny ‘Swift’ Garcia (36-3, 21 KOs) comes in at 154-lb for the first time after leaving the ring in nineteen months since losing to Errol Spence Jr. in December 2020.

Danny Garcia’s Last Six Battles:

  • Errol Spence Jr. – lost 12 USD
  • Ivan Redkach – UD 12 win
  • Adrian Granados – Win 7 TKO
  • Shawn Porter – lost 12 UD
  • Keith Thurman – Lost 12 . SD card
  • Samuel Vargas – won by TKO 7

34-year-old Danny ‘Swift’ should have too much talent and fighting prowess for Benavidez Jr, but it’s hard to see him having much success outside of this bout.

Garcia 5’8 will have many problems trying beat these killers at 154: Jermell Charlo, Sebastian Fundora, Tim Tszyu, Tony Harrison and Israil Madrimov. Danny is too young, old, and inactive to beat those guys.

Also, Spence and Terence Crawford are both going up to 154 soon, and Garcia won’t beat either of them.

Yes, Danny could be a B-side for Crawford, but he probably won’t win, and Spence won’t give him a rematch.

Jose Benavidez’s last six matches:

  • Francisco Emmanuel Torres – Draw 10
  • Terence Crawford – 12 . TKO loss
  • Frank Rojas – KO 1 win
  • Matthew Strode – TKO 8
  • Francisco Santana – UD 10
  • Sidney Siqueira – UD 10

Benavidez’s 12-year professional resume is largely unnamed, with the exception of Crawford, and that’s unsettling.

You want to see Benavidez take a step forward long before he takes on Crawford, and it’s probably too late now.

Benavidez’s two most recent performances show that he has a lot of work to do before he is considered one of the top heavyweights and that he doesn’t often fight to make the necessary improvements. .

Who knows how long until we see Benavidez rematch after taking on Danny on July 30?

“Danny Garcia and Jose Benavidez Jr have agreed to a fight on July 30 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn; source told ESPN. PBC’s main event on Showtime was Garcia’s 154-pound debut after DSG won titles at 140 and 147. His first game since December 2020 was a loss to Spence, “speak Mike Coppinger.
