‘Danger to life’ as thunderstorm warning issued for part of London and the South East | UK News

Forecasters warn of thunderstorms and flooding in parts of London and the South East today.

There is a potential for power outages and some communities may experience power cuts if roads are disrupted due to weather.

The Met Office issued an amber thunderstorm warning at 11am on Wednesday, extending until 10pm tonight.

It includes much of London as well as West Sussex, East Sussex, Kent and Essex.

The Met Office warns the public:

  • Flooding of homes and businesses is likely to happen quickly, causing damage to some buildings from floodwaters, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • There is a possibility of fast-flowing water, deep flooding that is dangerous to life
  • In areas where floods or lightning strikes, delays and some cancellations of train and bus services may occur.
  • Water sprays and sudden floods can lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Some communities may be cut off if roads are flooded
  • Power outages may occur and other services for some homes and businesses may be lost

It came as roads in parts of south-west England flooded on Tuesday on monday heavy rain and thunderstorms.

One of the reasons for concern is heavy rain followed by weeks of dry conditions – when the ground is too dry, it can’t absorb rain fast enough, so water seeps through the soil and causes flooding.

The Met Office said Monday marked the eighth day in a row with temperatures hitting the 30°C (86°C) threshold.
