Dan Walker: Presenter ‘confident’ he is not to blame for bike crash | UK News


Broadcaster Dan Walker has said he “believes I’m not at fault” after he was hit by a car while cycling earlier this week.

Writing in The Sunday Times, the 45-year-old said he was “probably dead” but confirmed he could not remember any details about the crash.

“There’s nothing there yet, which most of me are very pleased with. I can’t go into details at the moment as it may take about a week for the police to release their report, but after speaking Talk to Conor (a cop I believe I am not at fault for and I hope this can be resolved out of court,” he said.

“I know I might be dead but I also know it’s easy to make mistakes, even if you’re trying to be careful.

“I can’t really remember what they (the driver) looked like, from that moment on they looked at me as I turned around, but I remember they looked so miserable and I imagine that’s all what they were thinking about at that moment.

“That Monday could be the day that changes their lives forever. I asked Conor if I could talk to the driver if they agreed to that. I’ll let you know what happens.”

Presenter hopes to return to work next week

Walker thanked the police, NHS and ambulance services, as well as friends, family and members of the public for their help following the accident.

He said he hates “doing nothing” and confirmed that he hopes to return to his role as Channel 5’s news presenter next week.

“As long as the swelling and bruising subsides, I think I’ll be back to work this weekend,” he wrote.

‘Don’t be a helmet. Wear helmet’

In several social media posts after the accident, Walker was said the helmet he was wearing saved his life.

In his article for The Sunday Times, he writes: “If anyone is looking for a new campaign slogan for cyclists, I can humbly suggest the message on some of the flowers that are sent this week: ‘Don’t wear a helmet. Wear a helmet.'”

On Wednesday, a South Yorkshire Police spokesman told Sky News: “No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.”

Walker left the BBC to join Channel 5 last year and star in the 2021 series of Seriously Come Dance.
