Damian Lillard has to undergo surgery, it will take 6-8 weeks

Damian Lillard’s 2021-22 season appears to be in jeopardy.

Lillard is expected to have surgery this week to address the abdominal wound, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports. He will be evaluated in six to eight weeks, and his return to the ring this season will depend on his health and the position of the Trail Blazers.

Lillard has not competed since December 31 and has reportedly been dealing with the issue throughout the season and since last year’s Summer Olympics. He missed his time in early December after an MRI confirmed lower abdominal tendinitis, and after meeting with a pair of specialists this week, the decision to pursue surgery was made.

In 29 appearances this season, Lillard is averaging 24 points, 4.1 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game with 40.2% shots from the field and 32.4% from three points. Those shots were the lowest of his career and 24 points per game would be the lowest he’s hit since the 2014-15 season.

The Trail Blazers picked Lillard sixth overall in the 2012 draft from Weber State, and he’s been lacking in franchise background since. Over 11 seasons, he brought in a career average of 24.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game.

Portland enters Wednesday 16-24 and is in 10th place in the Western Conference, good for the final starting spot for the knockout stages.
