Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson wants another NFL team alongside Cowboys

Apparently, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson is up for a battle with a Jerry Jones. In response to a Tweet posted by the NFL on CBS, asking which city deserves to be the next NFL expansion team, Johnson was quick to respond to Dallas.

“The answer is Dallas,” Johnson tweeted. “Why? We’re about to overtake the Chicago subway and become the number 3 subway in the US, going to be the biggest US subway with NO 2 teams. Football is king here. Dallas needs one. expanded team and we could sustain 2 better NFL teams than LA or NY.”

I do not say Johnson doesn’t have some valid reasons to back his claim, but it’s going to be a very uphill battle. There is no doubt that Dallas/Ft. Worthwhile metro area could support a second NFL team. However, if this gains any traction, Jones will be on Johnson’s ass trying to close it.

As the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, Jones is making ten times more money. Jones will fight to the death for this. There was no way Jones was willing to step aside and share in the Dallas market. Jerry went public with his feelings years before the NFL flirted put a team in San Antonio. Then Jones wouldn’t do that nonsense, and he certainly won’t do it now.

Honestly, Jones is going to have a big problem when a group moves anywhere within a 250-mile radius of his Cowboys. While that’s an ambitious thought for Johnson, and having another NFL team would certainly help the local economy, it’s not going to happen with Jerry around. Johnson is a Dallas native and was elected the city’s 60th Mayor in June 2019. If this talk by a second NFL team in Dallas gains any traction, Jones is likely to drop the market. chief out of town.

Say what you want about the Cowboys and their fan base, and much is said about them constantly, but they are a loyal group. I don’t think it would be that easy to just bring another team into the market and expect people to accept the new franchise right away. I know a lot of Cowboys fans and it will take time to build a new fan base on the other side of the city.

Even if the Cowboys play in Arlington and not actually in Dallas, building a significant following for a new organization can take a generation or two. Jones also has other business ventures in the area. So in his mind, the entire metro area is his territory. I just don’t see him sharing that with another NFL organization that would likely cut his Cowboys profits significantly.

Another storyline that could be related to this is the simmering resentment between Jones and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. In a recent interview, former Papa John’s CEO John Schnatter asserted that he approach Jones and Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder about Goodell being fired. So this is something else to watch as trying to add another team in Dallas could be seen as Goodell going back to Jones.

This whole scenario is intriguing and could set off some fireworks in North Texas if anything happens.
