The Dallas Cowboys made it through the 2022 NFL draft without making any big waves. Two weeks before the draft, Jerry Jones wrote on the record that he would ready to move in this draft left Big D fans on pins and needles. Dallas didn’t make any moves to jump up and play it safe in the first inning but may have missed out on drafting a future star.
For the 24th overall pick, Dallas picked Tyler Smith, a tackle from Tulsa. This looks like an option for the future while adding instant depth. But the Cowboys were in a key position to use an offensive line of defense and replace Randy Gregory in an instant.
Jermaine Johnson II of Florida was on the board and was right there for Jones to draft. Johnson had two picks then went to the Jets in 26th place. This was seen by drafters as a good value pick as several mock drafts featuring Johnson made the top 10. The tall guys. compensation. In fact, the Jets rated Johnson so highly that they almost picked him with a 10th overall pick.
So far, the Cowboys are getting a lot of grades of C or lower for their draft picks. Of course, we won’t know how good or bad this class really is for a few years. Dallas addressed a lot of the needs in this draft. It is possible to question the order in which it was done, but they filled in the places that needed to be filled.

Dallas drafted an edge driver in the second round taking Sam Williams of Ole Miss with a 56th overall pick. While at Ole Miss, Williams had a number of off-court problems including sex pin fees got him suspended from the show. That fee was eventually dropped. With Gregory now in DenverWilliams will be expected to enter the Cowboys’ peak rotation alongside DeMarcus Lawrence, Dante Fowler Jr., and Dorance Armstrong Jr.. Williams had 12.5 tackles and 15 tackles in 13 games last season at Ole Miss.
In addition to the offensive line, Dallas also address other needs on offense, like tight ends and wide receivers. After cutting Blake Jarwin before this season, the Cowboys knocked out Wisconsin’s Jake Ferguson in the fourth round. Ferguson caught 145 balls and 13 TDs during his Wisconsin career. Dallas’ TE start Dalton Schultz was also a fourth-round pick in 2018. The Cowboys seem to have a thing to do to put the TEs in the middle of the draft.

Dallas also increased their depth at the receiver, sending Jalen Tolbert out of South Alabama in the third round. We’ll quickly find out how good Tolbert can be. So depending on how Tolbert looks in training camp and pre-season, we could see rookie play a major role in early 2022.
Tolbert could be a good pick for Dallas, as he could go earlier in the third inning or maybe later in the second. So to get him where the Cowboys did, they got lucky. And because the team is thinner on reception, Cowboys fans should know well what to expect from Tolbert sooner rather than later.
All in all, this is like an average draft for Dallas based on what we know right now. None of their options really surprise you at this point. Even their #1 pick is Smith, considered by some to have reach. One plot to watch out for is Dallas radio host that said he would retire if the Cowboys pick Smith with 24th pick in round one.
Bob Sturm of 96.7 The Ticket in Dallas made this statement before the draft, then had a good laugh about it with Smith on air after the draft. Maybe this will become a situation that Smith uses as motivation to go out and claim a starting spot in his rookie season. Otherwise, it’s hard to give this draft anything better than a C at the moment. This draft was fine for Dallas but could have been better.
