A researcher in Cyprus has discovered a strain of coronavirus that combines delta and omicron variants, Bloomberg News reported on Saturday.

Leondios Kostrikis, a professor of biological sciences at the University of Cyprus, calls the strain “deltacron,” because of its omicron-like genetic markers in the delta genome, Bloomberg reported.

So far, Kostrikis and his team have found 25 cases of the virus, according to reports. It is too early to say whether there are more instances of stress or the effects it may have.

“We’ll see in the future whether this strain is more pathological or contagious or if it will prevail” over the two dominant strains, Mr. Kostrikis said in an interview with Sigma TV on Friday. are deltas and omicrons. He believes the omicron will also surpass deltacron, he added.

The researchers submitted their findings this week to GISAID, an international database that tracks viruses, according to Bloomberg.

The deltacron variant emerged as the omicron continued to rapidly spread globally, causing an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases. The US is reporting an average of more than 600,000 new cases per day over seven days, according to an analysis of data by CNBC on Friday, according to an analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University. That’s a 72% increase from last week and a pandemic record.
