Cycle Tracker Flo Launches ‘Incognito Mode’ for iOS Devices

Flo’s Incognito Mode has arrived. Period Tracker promise to debut new regime shortly after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in an attempt to allay privacy-related fears. Activists and privacy advocates have noticed apps that track cycles following the Supreme Court’s decision, warning users that the data they collect could be used to investigate crimes abortion service seekers. They urge users to remove those apps, especially if they live in states where abortion is currently banned.

The new incognito mode allows anyone to use Flo without having to enter a name, email address, or any other kind of identifier. Flo partnered with Cloudflare, same company Apple worked with give iCloud Private Relay, to ensure that it can provide users with “as much privacy as possible.” The company clarified that it doesn’t sell identifiable health data, but it wants to offer the mode “to reassure users living in states affected by the abortion ban.”

Incognito mode is certainly welcome, especially for those who remember Flo’s outstanding history when it comes to privacy. Back in 2019, The Wall Street Journal report it as share sensitive user dataincluding information about someone trying to get pregnant, using Facebook, Google, and other third-party apps.

Since any information given to an app while incognito will not be associated with an identifier, that information will be completely lost if the device is lost. It also cannot be transferred to a new device, and only essential data, such as cycles and symptoms, can be copied to a new account. Users can also assign access codes for an extra layer of protection, although they will completely lose access to their information if they forget. In other words, it can be quite easy to lose access to data while in incognito mode, which is why users must actively choose to enable it.

Cycle tracker incognito mode is now available to iOS users and will be available on Android devices in October.
