Cyberpunk 2077 sequel codenamed Orion announced by CD Projekt Red

A sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 has been confirmed. During the Team Strategy Update stream held late Wednesday, CD Projekt Red announced a bunch of new projects in development, including a sequel to the futuristic role-playing game 2020. Yes Codenamed “Orion”, the project is billed as taking “the Cyberpunk franchise further and further tapping into the potential of this dystopian future universe”. According to CD Projekt Red president and CEO, Adam Kiciński, the development is still in its early stages and requires further development of the team.

To enhance development on Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, CD Projekt Red is expanded with a new studio, set in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. In partnership with the existing team in Vancouver, the company will create a North American division that will take charge of the top work on Orion. Although the studio keeps the details secret, it has confirmed a long-term partnership with Epic gamewith future titles to be built using Unreal Engine. The developers have stated before that it will be based on Unreal Engine 5 for The Witcher 4this early year.

“I am proud to say that Cyberpunk 2077 recently hit 20 million copies sold,” said Kiciński, recalling the nascent revival the game has enjoyed over the past month. CD Projekt Red previously confirmed that their Blade Runner-esque action RPG has seen a spike in traffic, attracts a million daily players, as of mid-September. Part of the success can be attributed to the release Netflix anime Cyberpunk Edgerunners, open to critical acclaim. “With this, we’ve sold a total of more than 85 million copies of our top four games,” he added.

Cyberpunk 2077 also has the first major story DLC, coming in 2023, in which Keanu Reeves reprises his role as Johnny Silverhand, as we pledge allegiance to the “New United States of America”. Title “Phantom Liberty“, Expansion is coming computer, PS5and Xbox Series S / X. The studio insists that it will not launch the final generation console.

In other news, Marcin Iwiński, co-founder and joint CEO of CD Projekt Red will step down from his position at a later date. “By the end of 2022, I will hand over my duties to my colleagues on the board,” he said in a prepared statement. Iwiński is looking to join the supervisory board as Chairman, exempting himself from the non-executive role, but allowing him to “stay active and engaged”, supporting the management.

In addition, CD Projekt Red plans to create a separate IP, codenamed “Hadar.” Early-stage conceptual work begins in 2021 and the project will be developed 100% in-house for the first time. “It is important to understand that we have not created a game yet,” confirmed Michał Nowakowski, a member of the board of directors. “We are working on the foundation of this new installation.”

Currently, there is no release window for the Cyberpunk 2077 Orion sequel. Development on the project is much later than the timeline, as CD Projekt Red shifts its focus to three new The Witcher games. Cyberpunk 2077 is out now on PC, PS5, PS4Xbox Series S/X and Xbox one.
