The Sri Lankan team at the Commonwealth Games asked their athletes and officials for their passports after three members of the tour group disappeared from their village. Sri Lanka, which is facing a major economic crisis, has selected a 161-member team, including 51 officials, for the Olympics.

The Commonwealth Sports Federation and Sri Lanka Cricket sponsored the athletes’ participation. The Sri Lankan team’s press attaché, Gobinath Sivarajah confirmed to PTI that a judoka, a wrestler and judo manager had disappeared.

“We have asked all athletes and officials to submit their passports to our respective venue officials in all villages after the incident. Police are investigating and both three could not cross the UK border. What happened is really unfortunate,” Sivarjah said.

The Sri Lankan judo team consists of three men and two women. According to reports, the missing judoka was a woman.

Judo and wrestling events are taking place at Coventry Arena, a 30-minute drive from Birmingham.

Sri Lankan athletes have had an extremely difficult time building the CWG as the country is grappling with a major debt crisis in addition to severe food and fuel shortages.

Members of the basketball team have been forced to walk about 20kms to their training center for the past three months due to lack of fuel.
