India’s Sudhir won the historic gold medal in men’s heavyweight weightlifting and also set a Commonwealth Games record with a total score of 134.5. Sudhir lifted 208kg in the first attempt and then took the lead with the second 212kg.
Sudhir, 27, an Asian Para Games bronze medalist, is disabled due to the effects of polio. He opened an Indian para sports medalist account in the ongoing CWG.
Ikechukwu Christian Obichukwu took the silver medal with 133.6 points, while Micky Yule took the bronze medal with 130.9 points.
Sudhir won bronze in the men’s 88kg with a best lift of 214kg at the World Open Asia-Oceania Weightlifting Championships in South Korea in June.
Sudhir, who began campaigning hard in 2013 at Sonipat, has also qualified for the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, which has been postponed to next year.
