Cuphead: Delicious Final Course Review – Delicious sips from a well-deserved cup of wine

The long-awaited and aptly named The Delicious Last Course serves up a great final dish that acts more like a satisfying dessert than a full-fledged second aid. While it’s not long, it offers a bunch of exciting demonic boss battles and a welcomed addition in Ms. Chalice is now playable.

Miss Chalice sports a unique set of moves like a double jump, safely dodging danger and even gaining an extra health point. She is a blast to use, and I love taking advantage of her extra mobility. Did she make Cuphead an easier experience? In part, but she doesn’t turn the game into a game of waffles. Instead, she gives the player more options to work with, which makes her a more advanced character because of the way I have to change my gameplay to account for the new tricks of the game. she.

I like that she subtly encourages aggression by having a side dash instead of the jump version, meaning I have to dash towards danger to deftly repel the offense. Her final attack, a vertical column of energy, requires getting close and personal with the enemy, rewarding boldness with massive blows. I also enjoyed taking Miss Chalice through the base game and tackling familiar bosses with her unique traits. She offers newcomers a great alternative from the start while giving veterans a new way to topple familiar baddies. Miss Chalice also makes the running and polarizing gun phases of the base game more tolerable.

It doesn’t matter how many jump or hit points you have if you don’t know how to use them. Delicious Last Course presents a series of exciting but challenging boss battles that have, in most cases, pushed my skills to the brink. I strongly recommend returning players to warm up by replaying one or two bosses in the base game before getting into this expansion. Since you get early access to the DLC, first-timers must at least complete the island first before tackling new content.

From dodging tennis balls and firing lasers on planes in an intense dogfight to fending off sentient icebergs while battling snow witches, these entertaining new enemies love to throw everything at you. everywhere at the same time. I’d say they rank with the battles from Cuphead’s final third in terms of difficulty, as the challenge comes in analyzing multiple projectiles and weaving between them while unleashing hell on your own. Design-wise, these foes match the whimsy of the original rogues gallery, and it’s also fun (and nerve-wracking) to watch, as a gangster spider takes on many new forms.

Only a boss whose final twist feels cheaper is enjoyable because it fixes the controls with little time to adjust. The most important skill, but trial and error is still a frustrating element of the experience sometimes. Taking damage from a new attack I wouldn’t expect, like having the bad guy fall on my head with no indication of where it might be, is still very frustrating. But every opponent feels conquerable, no matter if you’re Miss Chalice or Cuphead/Mugman.

Amazingly, the revamped parry challenges have become my favorite encounters on The Delicious Last Course. An evolution of the base game’s mausoleum minigames, which are pretty cool but with a caveat, this new game pits the player against five unique bosses that can only be defeated by use moves in increasingly creative ways. I like to flex my abilities and move time by carefully attacking a horseman’s weak point or pushing decapitated heads towards an executioner. Most importantly, these levels force me to think about how to attack. Any enemy in Cuphead can be taken down by holding down the fire button, but figuring out different methods to use offensive defensive maneuvers becomes an interesting battle puzzle. Since The Delicious Last Course skips the platform levels, these arena battles offer a great time apart from the main head-to-head matches. I want to see more of them.

Our heroes can equip themselves with new powers, such as a lightning-flavoured version of an orchid shot or an upward-firing tornado, ideal for hitting aerial targets. My favorite item becomes Crackshot, powerful bullets that can break into smaller bullets that hit the nearest target. They fit well into the existing arsenal.

I don’t want to mention the soundtrack. Cuphead has one of the best scores in the modern game, and The Delicious Last Course carries that banner with some new tunes. The new main menu theme manages to pass the original intro song by a mile.

Delicious Last Course sends our fun drink containers to a high note. It provides a fun ultimate test of your skills while also refreshing the original adventure by providing players with a fun new character to enjoy. There will be more Cupheads at the end of the day, but I had a great time revisiting Studio MDHR’s amazing animated universe, testing my mettle against the villains, and feeling overwhelming victory. full of life again.
