Cunningham asks for answers on his opponent’s failed test: What if I die?

Jason Cunningham has responded to the news about Zolani Tete’s positive drug test result, which could see the former two-time world champion face a four-year ban.

Tete delivered a devastating knockout in the fourth round of the super bantamweight competition at Wembley Arena, London.

Doncaster’s Cunningham has not returned to the ring since. Going into the game, he is in high form with a streak of seven wins in a row. While he says his fighting career isn’t over yet, he’s turned to the management side of things.

When I heard about Tete’s positive test – occurred immediately after the battle – ‘Iceman’ demanded an answer via Doncaster Free Press.

“I have never been knocked unconscious in my life. What if it got worse? The death has happened before, what if I die? I had a four week old baby.

“I need answers, I deserve answers. Who knows? How long have they known? It wasn’t like Conor Benn and Eubank’s situation where it was stopped before someone got hurt. I entered the ring and got hurt.”

After the match, Cunningham said on the broadcast that Tete’s strength was unlike anything he had faced in the ring before. Speaking to Boxing Social about the concussion he suffered, he said “my head didn’t feel like it was mine for the first week.”

His reaction to the doping test – which Tete’s team say they firmly believe was a mistake – is a stark reminder of the dangers of the sport and any kind of false advantage. Any creation can have unimaginable consequences.

Tete’s Form B will now be tested to determine the future of South Africans. The substance in question is the anabolic steroid, Stanozolol.
