Crumb Topping – A beautiful Mess

In my mind, I’m applying this crumble topping recipe under the “kitchen basics” section because it’s the kind of simple trick that can really elevate things like muffins or apple pie. .

And for whatever reason, I know this should probably be called crumb coating, but in my head I always think, “crumb coating” or “crumb coating”. Laugh out loud.

More than a recipe, this is kind of about the ratio between cold butter, flour, and sugar. It’s really simple. But this crumb coating can completely transform a store-bought muffin mix, or it can be added to the top of hot baked berries (the perfect late-summer dessert).

Can you make nuggets topping without brown sugar?

I make this with both brown and white sugar, but you can use granulated sugar in place of brown sugar.

However, if you do, I would add half a teaspoon of vanilla extract and maybe a sprinkle of cinnamon or another spice you may have, as the brown sugar gives this a little extra kick. smell.

Do you have to use cold butter?

Cold butter is very important here. Do not heat the butter, although it will be easier to work with. This is similar to how a pie crust is made – you want the recipe’s fat to be very cold.

If I make this first (before the muffins or whatever else I’m making to go with this), I put the crumble topping in the fridge until I’m ready to use it.

I mostly use this on muffins, cupcakes or cobblers, but another fun use is on cookies like this one. banana bread scones or blueberry muffins.

Happy baking! so so. Emma
