Coronavirus: Number of people over 65 hospitalized at new high since last year

On Friday April 1, COVID-19 restrictions were finally lifted as part of the government’s Live With Covid plan. The decision comes amid a surge in cases and one of the highest infection rates since the pandemic began two years ago. Part of this is due to the number of people still unvaccinated while part is also due to the weakened immunity brought by vaccines to the population. The increase in cases is affecting people of all ages, from young to old.

New data shows that the hospitalization rate for people over 65 is the highest since January 2021, rising from 26.3 to 28.4 per 100,000.

The last time hospitalizations were this high, the UK just entered its third national shutdown at a time when only a very small number of people were vaccinated.

Enrollment rates are also high for those over 85 and over 75.

The admission rates for the former stand at 189.2 per 100,000 while for the latter they have increased from 77.0 to 87.3 per 100,000.
