Coronavirus: China extends lockdowns as Covid outbreak worsens

BEJING: China’s daily local Covid-19 infection rate has risen to its highest level since early May, with lockdowns sweeping across the country.
There were 3,800 new cases reported on Thursday, up 22% from a day earlier and the highest since the country’s biggest outbreak in the spring, according to the National Health Commission. An outbreak in the southern Guangzhou factory center continued to accelerate after at least one district in the city halted in-person learning and dining, with 572 domestic infections reported on Wednesday.
