Pandemic changes youth personality traits: Research
Pandemic changes youth personality traits: Research
  • A research team led by faculty members at Florida State University School of Medicine has found that the Covid-19 pandemic appears to have cause personality changesespecially in young people.
  • This indicates that a globally stressful event, such as a pandemic, can affect personality in ways that more localized crisis events, such as hurricanes and earthquakes, generally do not.
  • Research: The research team used vertical personality assessments from 7,109 online participants Learn about Studying in the UScompared the personality traits of a five-factor model – neurotic, extroverted, open-minded, agreeable, and conscientious.
  • The time periods measured were pre-pandemic (May 2014 to February 2020), early pandemic (March to December 2020), and post-pandemic (2021-2022).
  • Findings: Research, published In PLOS ONEfound that the pandemic’s population-wide stressors caused young people to become more moody, more unresponsive and prone to stress, and less cooperative, trusting, and even responsibility.
  • The analysis showed relatively little change between the pre-pandemic and early-pandemic assessments. But the previous data compared with the data from 2021-22 produced marked changes. These changes are only a tenth of the standard deviation, or about 10 years from the normal personality change.
  • Changes in participants under the age of 30 indicate disrupted maturation, demonstrating evidence of increased neuroticism and decreased agreeableness and conscientiousness, in the later stages of the pandemic. Middle-aged adults (aged 30 to 64) also showed changes, but the oldest group showed no statistically significant changes.
  • Implications: Lead author Angelina Sutin said: “Neurocentrism and conscientiousness predicted mental and physical health, as well as educational and occupational relationships and outcomes, and observed changes in These characteristics may increase the risk of a worse outcome.

Covid vaccination prolongs menstrual cycle
Covid vaccination prolongs menstrual cycle
  • A large international study confirmed the findings of a previous US study that linked Covid-19 vaccination with an average increase in menstrual cycle length. However, the jabs did not affect the length of menstruation.
  • The study, published in British Medical Journalused data from a popular cycle tracking app called Natural Cycles and included people from all over the world, but most of the participants were from North America, the UK, and Europe.
  • The researchers used “unidentified” data from the app to compare menstrual cycles between 14,936 vaccinated participants and 4,686 unvaccinated people.
  • Results showed that those who received the vaccine had an average delay of 0.71 days after the first dose of the vaccine.
  • However, those who were vaccinated twice in one menstrual cycle experienced more interruptions. In this group, cycle length increased by an average of four days, and 13% missed periods by eight days or more, compared with 5% in the unvaccinated group.
  • Women who were younger and had a longer cycle before vaccination were more likely to have an increase.
