- Children are mostly resilient to the ongoing pandemic, with the majority having mild to mild symptoms But a small percentage succumbing to complications from severe, potentially life-threatening infections. known as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).
- It is hoped that surviving MIS-C – a condition in which various body parts can become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes or digestive organs – will provide give children some extra protection from still-developing virus sub-variants like Omicron, but New US study dashed all such hope.
- Study shows that children who have previously taken Covid-19 or MIS-C are not protected against the newer variant of Omicron published in Nature Immunology.
- Researchers took blood samples from 62 children and adolescents hospitalized with severe Covid, 65 children and adolescents hospitalized with MIS-C, and 50 outpatients who had recovered from mild Covid-19. All samples were taken during 2020 and early 2021, prior to the appearance of the Omicron variant.
- They exposed the samples to a pseudovirus (derived from SARS-CoV-2, but cleared of virulence) in the laboratory and measured the levels of antibodies in the samples that could neutralize 5 Different variants of interest, Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Omicron.
- Overall, children and adolescents showed some loss of cross-neutralizing ability of antibodies against all five variants, but the loss was most pronounced for Omicron.
- However, children who received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine showed higher neutralizing antibody titers compared with the five variants, including Omicron. The case is enough to accelerate the rollout of vaccinations for India’s youngest population.

- Where: Maharashtra on Saturday reported the first Covid cases of the Covid sub-lineage BA.4 and BA.5. These strains were detected in at least seven people from Pune – four with BA.4 and three with BA.5. Of the patients, six were adults and one was a child. It is significant that all adults are fully immunized.
- The India SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Organization (INSACOG) had previously confirmed the presence of these strains in Tamil Nadu and Telangana – the first cases in the country.
- New domestic Covid cases increased by at least 17% for the week ending Sunday, reversing the downtrend in volume over the previous two weeks.
- What is it: INSACOG said: “BA.4 and BA.5 are sub-variants of the Omicron variant circulating globally. They were first reported from South Africa earlier this year and are now reported from a number of countries other family”. To date, there is no indication that BA.4 and BA.5 are capable of causing new Covid symptoms or more severe illness. But studies have shown that they have a remarkable ability to escape the immune system.
- Why not panic: Based on Medical experts no need to worry about the spread of sub-variants. “It is possible that these strains of bacteria are increasing in numbers every day, but there is no increase in the number of deaths or a worrying increase in the number of hospital admissions. After all, these are sub-lines of Omicron that have been widely exposed,” said a senior health official.
