Cook hand-drawn Chinese New Year dinner in this cute free indie game

While the Lunar New Year celebrations continue (I’m enjoying all the fireworks in my neighborhood at night), you might want to join in by playing Tet. This adorable little free indie game lets you flip through mini-games to prepare dinner for your Vietnamese Lunar New Year party before all your guests arrive. Cut this, fry that, and don’t forget to wash your hands! Designed and hand-drawn by Vietnamese-Swiss illustrator Charlotte Broccard, here are five minutes of adorable fun.

Tet is a series of culinary minigames, a series of tasks that hit the wide steps of a dish. Click and drag to cut the tofu. Chase the banana slices around the frying pan with your pointer and drag to separate one end of the lettuce. Click, hold and up and down and up and down and up and down and up and down to grate the carrots. They are not difficult but it has a timer and you could lose if guests arrive before you are ready, you are a terrible host.

It’s a cute little game that looks daring, playful, and fun. I also love the little visual jokes, the weirdly long fingers squeezing bugs, and the weird variations of a happy thumb for a good job. And while you’re timing it, take a moment to dig into other things in the scene to see what happens.

Well, Tet is just so nice. Some people think the word is cursed with faint compliments but no, it’s good when things are going well.

Broccard said: “This project started with a desire to share my passion for cooking, teach my lovely Vietnamese mother delicious recipes and make you smile with drawings and ideas. mine”. And it actually teaches recipes. At the bottom, you can see the full cooking instructions for the two dishes that you zoom in. I was quite curious about trying the banana and tapioca pearls dessert for myself.

Tet is over and it’s free On steam (with a chance to tip at the end) and pay as much as you want on Itch.io (no minimum price) for Windows, Mac and Linux. It is also available for iOS and Android squiggly. It was published by Playables who also published Children.
