Constipation in children: What parents need to know

Myra, 5 years old, complained of abdominal pain. Worried, the parents took the child to the doctor. When doctors recommend an abdominal X-ray, they are naturally very worried. But the results shocked them. The child has severe constipation leading to abdominal pain.

Signs of Chronic Constipation

Most children are chronically constipated. Some of the most common complaints are persistent abdominal pain and hard stools that are difficult to pass. Most parents tend to believe that constipation is just passing hard stools. But medically, there are mainly three possible causes of constipation: First, difficulty having a bowel movement, secondly not having a daily bowel movement, and third, the child passing small, dry stones like stool or stool with small amount do not have a bowel movement in one go. .

Other signs of chronic constipation are pain during bowel movements, stomach pain, and mushy stools in a child’s underwear, which basically means that the child’s stool is accumulating in the rectum. Another worrisome sign is blood on the surface of hard stools.

If the intestines keep accumulating inside, the child will not eat. In some severe cases, children also get cuts and bruises around the potty seat. That fear makes them unable to hold back their stool, which is even more dangerous. Unsupervised constipation can make children malnourished, anorexic and unhealthy.

How do you help your child if he or she is chronically constipated?

According to pediatrician Nihar Parekh, avoid giving your baby extra milk. The more milk a baby drinks, the less likely he is to want to eat other nutritious foods. Maida items like cookies are also a big culprit for constipation. Furthermore, I have seen many parents feeding their children plain rice. Diets low in vegetables often lead to a hard bowel.

Foods that prevent and treat constipation

If your child has chronic constipation, there are a number of dietary changes that can help ease symptoms:

Feed them a high-fiber diet

Add some fruits to their diet like bananas, prunes and anjeer

Make sure they are active and exercise daily

They have to drink a lot of water

If the problem does not resolve, you can take prescription medication. Most people are afraid of laxatives thinking that it can have side effects or make the body dependent on it but that is not true.
