Via Brian Webber: Conor Benn says he hopes to have an “announcement” for his next fight within 24 to 48 hours. Benn (21-0, 14 KOs) says he’s waiting for the battle to be “finished”.
It’s no secret that 25-year-old weight class contender Benn will fight next. That would be middleweight Chris Eubank Jr (32-2.23 KOs) with a reported 156 lbs on October 8 at the O2 Arena in London.
Boxing fans mocked Benn because he decided to go into a big money fight with middleweight Eubank Jr rather than focus on trying to win world titles at 147.
Some believe that Benn has given up on becoming world champion, knowing that he can’t take on talented heavyweights like Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, Vergil Ortiz Jr, Errol Spence Jr. , Terence Crawford, or even aging former champion Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman.
Benn’s promoter Eddie Hearn probably knows his limitations as a boxer because he took great care in the match arrangements he made for him. Conor’s most challenging battles as a professional have been against these older men:
- Cedrick Peynaud
- Chris Van Heerden
- Chris Algieri
- Adrian Granados
- Samuel Vargas
Benn hasn’t fought a world No. 147 contender in his six-year professional career, and now he’s up against a top fifth-place middleweight contender. It has withdraw money wrote it all for Benn and was basically a confession that he was never serious about his career.
In other words, that’s all smoke and mirror along with clever promoter Eddie Hearn compares Benn to fodder to get casual boxing fans excited about him.
“We hope to have an announcement in 24/48 hours. I’m waiting for it to be finished, that’s all,” Conor Benn told talk.
Johnny Nelson said: “It’s a very difficult situation because I don’t believe Eubank can safely, comfortably fight under 160 now. talkSPORT Boxing.
“So if they put a clause in there that he can’t put certain weight on, I’m telling you I’d be surprised if this was signed, stamped and delivered.
“That can be a big hurdle because Conor isn’t a big weight, and Chris is a big guy too. So weight is the main issue; weight is the argument for people to say it’s a ‘war gimmick. Why are these people doing it? ‘
“Historically, it was a great fight in terms of image, but it cannot be considered a fair fight because both are very good fighters.
“A loss to Chris would do more damage to his career than it would to Conor’s because Conor can say, ‘I just took a chance and went up there.’
“I just thought, how is Chris going to gain weight? I don’t see it happening. I saw this guy when he was down and struggling with the weight. He looks haggard.
“If you’re going to have to cut back a bit. I don’t know how he got to the weight class he needed,” said Nelson.
