Parliament on Saturday announced the first list of 124 candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections in Karnataka with former chief minister Siddaramaiah removed from his Varuna seat.
According to the list, the head of the National Congress of Pradesh Committee DK Shivakumar will contest the elections from his Kanakapura parliamentary constituency.
The party brought in former deputy prime minister G Parameshwara from Koratagere constituency (SC). Former ministers KH Muniappa and Priyank Kharge will run from Devanahalli and Chitapur (SC) respectively. Priyank is the son of Parliament Speaker Mallikarjun Kharge.
The party’s Central Election Commission cleared its first list of candidates after its meeting in Delhi on March 17. The committee is chaired by Parliament Speaker Kharge. Rahul Gandhi was also present at the meeting.
The National Assembly was the first party to announce the list of candidates for the election in Karnataka. The electoral commission has yet to release a schedule for congressional polls in the southern state.
The parliamentary polls in Karnataka are scheduled to take place before May when the current parliament’s term ends.
Congress is seeking to wrest power from the BJP in the southern state.
