Congress; Pratibha Singh, Sukhvinder Sukhu, Mukesh Agnihotri In Race

Pratibha Singh and Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the two main claimants, after the MLA meeting in Shimla

Shimla:

After a tense day over who should be prime minister, the 40 MLAs of Parliament in Himachal Pradesh on Friday night passed a traditional one-line party resolution authorizing “senior commanders” to make the decision. . The decision is expected on Sunday.

This is mainly for Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, besides Priyanka Gandhi, who campaigned actively in Himachal along with the new nation’s president Mallikarjun Kharge.

The MLA meeting was held with central supervisors Rajeev Shukla, Bhupinder Hooda and Bhupesh Baghel present to coordinate. They spoke with each MLA to gauge who had more support.

“Tomorrow we will submit our report to the central leadership and they can choose whoever they want,” Mr. Shukla said after the meeting. He insisted there was no infighting.

However, the resolution came after supporters of state parliament head Pratibha Singh showed strength ahead of a meeting in Shimla, her family’s dominant region. A crowd of party workers raised slogans and even blocked the car of Premier Chhattisgarh Bhupesh Baghel, demanding Pratibha Singh, three-time MP and wife of the late Virbhadra Singh, a former royal, ” deserving of the highest position.”

In the race alongside her were Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Mukesh Agnihotri, both with support bags in areas far from Shimla. Since today’s meeting took place in Shimla, support for Pratibha Singh has embraced the optics.

With an eye on optics, the party invited all three to sit next to Mr. Shukla during a media briefing.

Mr. Shukla said the MLA was welcomed at the meeting by Pratibha Singh; The resolution was presented by Mr. Agnihotri and endorsed by Mr. Sukhu, and the MLAs raised their hands in agreement.

Rivals: Royalties, loyalty, playing seniority

Black horses like Harshwardhan Chauhan are also expected to join the race, but the current story is three-sided.

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, longtime MLA from Nadaun in Hamirpur district, was promoted from the National Union of Students of India (NSUI) Congress wing.

He has said, at least on camera today, that he is not a book lover. But he made a candid remark more characteristic of Opinion during the campaign: “Yes, sure, I also have aspirations to be Minister.” In that interview, he said that factionalism in Parliament “died with the death of Virbhadra Singh”.

Although from another district in a different part of the state, he won the municipal elections twice in Shimla, and was appointed secretary of the cantonal unit in 2008, eventually becoming the head. state unit.

He was replaced as state unit chief in 2019 by Kuldeep Rathore, allegedly in a compromise against sectarianism.

Earlier this year, just months after Virbhadra Singh’s death, his wife was appointed director of the state unit – a move said to be meant to ensure a sympathetic vote is not wasted.

Pratibha Singh mentioned that empathy several times while performing a play for the top spot. She derives her strength and stature from the legacy of Virbhadra Singh, the royal lineage of Rampur-Bushahr near Shimla, who was prime minister six times.

Supporters cite an emotional connection to “Rani”, arguing that “votes were sought in Raja by saheb name.” She and her son, MLA Vikramaditya Singh twice, also made this point while ask her to take the chair.

As for Mukesh Agnihotri, the Opposition Leader in the now-voted BJP government, he won the fifth parliamentary election since switching from journalism to politics about two decades ago.

But he has yet to say anything about the race.

Mr. Agnihotri is considered the patron of the “royal family”, especially Virbhadra Singh, but gradually has ambitions of his own.
