Concern for women and children caught up in Ukraine conflict |

Catherine Russell, Newly Appointed Executive Director of UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), said on Monday that the situation of boys and girls entangled in conflict is getting worse by the minute.

Young life cut short

“Children have been killed. Children were injured. And children are deeply traumatized by the violence around them,” she said in statement.

UNICEF has renewed its appeal to all parties to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure. Hospitals, schools, water and sanitation facilities, as well as orphanages, were burned, according to reports.

Ms. Russell said explosives in densely populated areas, along with explosives left over from war, were a “real and present danger” to children.

She appealed the suspension of ongoing military operations, which would facilitate humanitarian access to those who had lost power after five days of intense air strikes and ground fighting.

She added: “It will also allow families in the worst-affected areas to venture out for food and water, seek medical attention or leave in search of safety.

Women and girls at risk

The fighting has caused massive displacement, forcing many Ukrainians to flee their homes, including to neighboring countries, said Pramila Patten, UN Special Representative for Sexual Violence in Conflict. .

It also puts women and girls at greater risk of violence.

Ms. Patten released a statement on Monday emphasizing the importance of protecting human rights and exercising restraint.

“Unless the conflict ends, thousands of other families will be forcibly displaced, dramatically escalating the scale of the already dire humanitarian situation and increasing the risk of violence and sexual exploitation.” ,” she alert.

Include women in decision making

Her statement came the day after the head UN Women underlined the agency’s commitment to support the Ukrainian people, especially women and girls, “at this most needed time.”

CEO Sima Bahous further emphasized that The full and meaningful participation of women is also important for improving peace and security processes.

“Therefore, involving women in decision-making and humanitarian responses is essential to ensure that their rights are upheld.” she added.

Ms. Bahous acknowledged civil society organizations in Ukraine, calling them important partners in the work of amplifying the voices of women and girls.
