Complete renovation of Belmont Racecourse with Tapeta

The New York Racing Association announced on December 3 the successful installation of Tapeta Footings synthetic surfaces at Belmont Park horse race. The racetrack renovation is part of an ongoing campaign to modernize the Belmont Park facility.

Located just northeast of the Belmont training track, the quarter-mile track is primarily used for jogging horses. Starting December 6, the racecourse will be open seven days a week from 5:30-10:30 a.m. ET.

In addition to providing riders with another all-weather training option, the new Belmont racecourse will provide important information on how synthetic surfaces perform in the many weather conditions encountered in Belmont during all year. The data and knowledge gained through the daily maintenance of the new racetrack will inform a variety of decisions if the NYRA proceeds to build the synthetic track as the fourth Belmont racing surface.

Prior to installing the synthetic surface, NYRA teams removed surface dirt and added a specially designed asphalt backing to promote maximum drainage. From there, the track is widened and leveled throughout, which reduces corners at all turns. The new racetrack features a rider protection system to replace the inner rails, as well as LED lighting throughout the perimeter of the track. To accommodate the expected increase in usage, the apron and access roads have been expanded and rebuilt.

“Modern synthetic surfaces have a wide range of applications for cavalrymen and racers alike, and we look forward to it,” said Glen Kozak, senior vice president of operations and capital projects at NYRA. get to work on this product every day and all season at Belmont Park.” .

In addition to the new racetrack, the project to build vehicular and pedestrian tunnels to the 45-acre suburb of Belmont Park is well underway. When completed, the tunnels will serve as access roads for commercial vehicles, allowing the NYRA to rebuild the Belmont main track and its two grass courts. The pedestrian tunnels will eventually provide access to the pitch for fans and the wider community.

Significant work on the existing tracks will begin after the end of the 2023 Belmont spring/summer meet.

Developed as a soil substitute by former jockey and current trainer Michael Dickinson, Tapeta is a synthetic racing and training surface composed of a blend of silica sand, wax and fibers. Tapeta has been extensively tested at training and racing facilities around the world and remains extremely stable in both cold and heavy rain.
