Colorado Avalanche players celebrate after defeating Tampa Bay Lightning in game 6 of the Stanley Cup final.

The Lightning won the most recent two Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021.

Avalanche defender and Norris Trophy 2021-2022 winner Cale Makar was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player during the knockout stages after scoring 29 points in the post-season prize.

“I tried not to look at the clock too much. I just tried to stay in the moment.” Makar said after the match.

“The pure joy of being able to take off the gloves and experience it again. Like I said, it’s been amazing to experience that with such a great group,” he added.

Avalanche players gather at the chessboards, celebrating their victory in Game 6.

Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar recounts the final moments of the game.

“I was so nervous. I didn’t even know the finish time. I saw the boys starting to celebrate on the bench and I said, ‘there’s still seven seconds to go; they’re celebrating. For what?’ That’s the kind of intensity we had there.”

Avalanche ended the 2022 NHL knockout round with a 9-1 record against the away team. The team’s only loss was to Tampa Bay in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Their nine road wins set a franchise record for the most in a playoff year and ended with the second-highest winning streak in NHL history behind six clubs with 10, most recently when St. . Louis Blues won the Stanley Cup in 2019.
