Colony switches to racing weekend for 2023

Colonial Downs will be changing its schedule for the 2023 season and will conduct live racing on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays with first post at 1:30pm. The decision was made during a meeting of the Virginia Racing Commission at the New Kent County track. The 2023 meeting will mark the first meeting under the direction of Churchill Downs Incorporated, which purchased the property earlier this year.

“CDI is proud to be entering Virginia with an expanded racing service that will allow more Virginians to attend and enjoy live races,” said Jack Sours, CDI Executive Vice President of Gaming. “Since the acquisition of Colonial Downs, we have remained steadfast in our aim to bring top quality racing and entertainment to New Kent with a product that will appeal to the best horses, trainers and jockeys. and by increasing the revenue stream from the historic races.”

Racetrack will announce the overnight wallet structure, special events and other features of the 2023 season as the time draws near. Colonial’s signature race, the $300,000 Virginia GIII Derby, will take place on Saturday, September 9, 2023.
