College Hoops Weekend Betting Preview: Mountain West, SEC-Big 12 and Big Ten

With one more week to go, we’re getting closer and closer to March Madness. Last weekend, we saw that Auburn was ready for the close-up, beating Kentucky at home. Rewards, their first ranking on the top of AP Poll. In typical college round-robin fashion, the Tigers followed that by winning over Mizzou by just one point.

From last week, we thought we were going to have a great game with UCLA hosting Arizona. Alas, UCLA played its best game of the season and dispatched the Wildcats in impressive style. If you like Bruins, then your answer is: Finally! I don’t worry too much about Arizona. The résumé might be a little bland, but the Wildcats have an NBA-level offensive line and shoot so badly that the game is out of the ordinary. If they lose to UCLA in a similar fashion at home next week, there’s probably some real reason to worry.

This weekend, we’re kicking off the action on Friday, a night where the best game is at the Mountain West Conference. Saturday is the big day of the weekend, and then on Sunday we have a great Big Ten appetizer before hitting the NFL for the rest of the day.

Friday, January 28

Boise State Broncos vs. Fresno State Bulldogs
11 p.m. ET
Expected Line: Fresno State -2

Mountain West is better than you think this season with more than half of the league placing in the top 60 at KenPom. Boise State last died on November 30 and is an incredible story. This team lost a home game to Cal-Bakersfield but is currently on a 13-match winning streak, including a home win over Fresno State with 10 points. The Broncos defended elite, and that should have them in this game against the Bulldogs late on Friday. Bang Fresno is also very strong defensively, and this can be decided late. I’m willing to lean a little bit in favor of Boise State and hopefully we can get all three points or more in the near future. This feels like a coin flip so getting points makes the most sense.

Go to Boise State.

Saturday, January 29

Kentucky Wildcats vs. Kansas Jayhawks
6 p.m. ET
Expected line: Kansas -3

It’s the SEC/Big 12 Challenge weekend, and this combination of green-blooded programs is the best we’ve received… thank you! Kentucky lost last week at Auburn when the game turned when freshman defending TyTy Washington left the game due to injury. Kentucky has more than enough talent to beat anyone in the country without him, but the Wildcats are once again outdone in this regard. It’s tempting to turn that into a high-value play because of their talented background, but Kansas is also very elite. This will be a heavyweight fight where the Jayhawks can go up against everything the Wildcats have and then some. This month, Kansas has shown they can also win close-ups, not just losers. Kentucky does not. In addition, Kentucky was also immediately leading 0-3 when being judged as an underdog this season.

Go to Kansas.

Baylor Bears vs. Alabama Crimson Tide
4 p.m. ET
Expected current: Baylor -5

Alabama has to have the weirdest resume of all colleges right now. Back when Tide beat Gonzaga and Houston in head-to-head matches, but in their last game, they lost to Georgia, the worst team in the SEC by a mile. It’s a road game, but that kind of variance is impossible to ignore. The Crimson Tide have only one home loss of the season, four points ahead of top-ranked Auburn, so there’s no doubt they can compete at the highest level – it’s just that their consistency is becoming terrible. As for Baylor, I’m not sure the Bears have the right ship after the two home losses they suffered after rising to the top of the leaderboard, but they’ve won their last three with 9, 14 and 25. the point. Their best game is as good as any in the country. The question is whether they will need it this weekend. They must be the game, even on the road.

Go to Baylor.

Tennessee Volunteers vs. Texas Longhorns
8 p.m. ET
Expected Line: Texas -3

This is a highly rated team game, but stay away if you really enjoy watching basketball. These programs are super defensive. There’s nothing wrong with that, but regardless of the opponent, their offense is frustrating for them. Some nights it seems like they don’t even practice shooting and passing. Texas lost a home game to Kansas State last week so a home loss to the Vols is certainly possible. The Longhorns’ best win of the season was against Oklahoma. Tennessee has better wins, including their only loss to Arizona before this week, but all of those wins have come at home. This is a really tough call, but I’m leaning towards home. Darn me because orange is my favorite color. There will be a lot on display on Saturday night.

Go to Texas.

Sunday, January 30

Ohio State Buckeyes vs Purdue Boilermakers
12 p.m. ET
Estimated current: Purdue -9

Purdue is fifth in the Big Ten rankings but is sixth behind KenPom – go numbers. It’s hard not to love the talent of the team from the foggy country, the team has more quality than anyone in the country. Plus, Jaden Ivey might just be the best guard in America. Their three defeats in the season were all in the league and are all 5 points or less apart. Ohio State is currently one of the exciting leads on the leaderboard and is definitely a quality team. The Buckeyes beat Duke at home, remember. However, they struggled to leave the Value City Arena. Their only tournament win on the road was at Nebraska, and they needed extra hours in that game. It’s hard to see them finding their best game on Sunday to frighten the team, especially given how underrated they are on the inside.

Go to Purdue.
