Minjee Lee scores 63rd in her last two starts
Minjee Lee finished nine under 63 to take a three-shot lead in the second half of the Cognizant Founders Cup.
Lee, who has had six career wins, was almost crowned the best round of the year on the LPGA Tour. She’s over 10 years old after her 15th birdie at the Upper Montclair Country Club.
However, the Australian made it through to the round of 16 and finished with a 36-hole total of 14 under 130, a shot far from the tournament’s record.
While she hasn’t won this year, Lee, 25, has competed in six tournaments, won two top 10 spots and has nothing worse than a draw in 23rd.
She finished second in the HSBC Women’s World Championships in March and third in the Los Angeles Open last month.
“Perhaps this will be the first and it will start the rest of the year,” Lee said.
First-round leaders, Madelene Sagstrom of Sweden and Lexi Thompson shared second place.
Sagstrom, who has a late 63rd Thursday, hit the 70 mark as it failed to build on momentum. Thompson, who hasn’t won a title since 2019, had 66 to finish 11 under.
Sanna Nuutinen, the 31-year-old Finnish player who played her first season on the LPGA Tour, has 68 and is fourth in ninth place alone.
Spain’s Carlota Ciganda and Megan Khang, who were shot behind Sagstrom in the opening round, were tied in fifth with eight under.
